DePaul College of Education Spring Forum 2023: Are We in the Midst of Reading Wars Again??
Recorded 5/12/2023
Continuing a yearlong focus on literacy, the COE Spring Forum delved into the current debates around 21st Century reading instruction. These so-called "reading wars," aren't new. Currently, advocacy for the "science of reading" throughout the country has reignited issues around the best pedagogy for teaching reading. Many states have enacted, or are considering, new laws mandating how reading must be taught, including Illinois.
The panel explored: A history of "reading wars;" what exactly is the science of reading (SOR) according to its proponents? Should there be a "sciences of reading?" What are best instructional practices for English language learners? What do students need to become fully literate and enthusiastic readers? What are the essential resources schools need to ensure all students' literacy?
Panel Included:
Dr. Sonia Soltero - Professor and Chair of the Department of Leadership, Language and Curriculum, College of Education, DePaul University
Dr. Rachael Gabriel - Professor of Literacy Education, University of Connecticut
Dr. Paul Thomas - Professor of Education, English and Secondary Education, Furman University
Dr. Marie Donovan offered opening remarks and moderated the forum:
"Our forum this evening centers on classroom practices in teaching children how to read, and the growing issues and controversies surrounding their perceived effectiveness. Our aim tonight is to broaden the conversation about these matters. We’ve convened this panel of school-based, policy-focused scholars so we can hear their current thinking about what matters most in ensuring all children learn to read, and to understand how they’ve reached their conclusions. By inviting these researchers to share, we recognize we’re also inviting you, our audience, to consider perspectives that presently might not align with or contain the variables you most value in your reading process theorizing or instructional practice. We trust that like us, you appreciate opportunities to think with other professionals in our field, and to find common ground upon which to build your 21st Century teaching and research."
