Ensuring the Success of ELLs When Reading and Writing in Content Area Classes and Advancing Their Academic Literacy Skills in English During Content Area Instruction (Gr. 6-12)

Designed for middle and secondary science and social studies teachers, this professional development series will review the features of academic language and the challenges ELLs face when reading and writing in middle and high school content area classes. It will help teachers consider the continuing needs of Transitioning through Commanding ELLs and the supports that must be provided so they can be successful. These sessions will highlight: the need to plan language learning activities as a part of content area instruction; so that students don¢t just acquire the expected content knowledge; but also advance in their reading and writing proficiency so they can succeed on high stakes subject matter tests. We will review a range of practical strategies that support comprehension when reading in a second language, as well as tools and strategies designed to advance content area writing abilities.
